For Fagskolen Innlandet, teaching quality is not just a vision. It is their core product. As one of Norway's largest providers of higher vocational education, with 3,000 students across both physical and digital locations, the mission is clear: The institution must ensure a consistent and high academic standard, whether the student is studying technical trades, healthcare, or management.
However, this is easier said than done. When feedback is fragmented and dependent on individual instructors, creating the comprehensive overview required to elevate quality assurance to a level that can be documented for authorities is challenging. This is exactly the challenge Fagskolen Innlandet set out to solve, and it lies at the heart of their journey toward full institutional accreditation.
In the past, feedback work was characterized by manual processes that varied from one instructor to another. Although engagement was high, the fragmented data meant it was difficult for management to establish the unified and documentable overview required by official bodies like NOKUT (The Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education). To reach the goal of accreditation, there was a need to elevate quality work from individual initiatives to a unified systemic level.
"The advantage of using StudentPulse compared to before, when we only used Google Forms, is primarily that the entire process is now systematized at a system level. This allows the school to work more uniformly and consistently across departments and programs. Additionally, the solution is GDPR-compliant, which gives us security in handling student data."
This shift has not only been about software but about creating clarity and security throughout the organization. All feedback is now gathered in one shared system, structured and standardized for everyone. This makes it possible to use data systematically, both for internal improvement and as vital documentation in accreditation processes.
Feedback now serves as a shared language that bridges the gap between student experiences, the daily lives of instructors, and management's strategic decisions. Leadership gains continuous insight into data, while instructors receive concrete feedback after each measurement, which they can use to develop their teaching and improve dialogue with students.
"StudentPulse gives us a unified system and a shared language for quality work, making it easier to collaborate across the entire organization."
Furthermore, results are presented to the class after each measurement, allowing students to see that their input actually leads to improvements. This is a crucial part of building a sustainable feedback culture. Occasionally, the data even offers surprises: students consistently score very high on satisfaction with their own efforts, a positive signal of engagement and self-confidence that management would not have detected with the old approach.
The value of continuous measurement became evident when a pulse caught a significant drop in the score for course structure. The data revealed a critical accumulation of workload for a group of students because an exam and a major project had unfortunately coincided.
While this frustration might previously have only been discovered after the course ended, real-time data enabled management to make a swift decision. Just a week and a half after the measurement, it was decided to adjust the study plan and reschedule the exam for future cohorts.
"This will apply to future students and take effect from the next academic year. While it does not benefit current students, it is still a great example of being able to change something that is not working based on student feedback."
For NOKUT, this ability to document an unbroken line from data collection to concrete quality improvement is a decisive factor in the accreditation process.
Fagskolen Innlandet's ambitions are built on the desire for subject-specific data per class that can be compared year over year. Once this is in place, the platform can be used analytically for long-term quality work. The goal is for both instructors and management to easily access results for their specific classes.
"StudentPulse has made quality work with student feedback more systematized, continuous, and transparent. It has contributed to a unified practice across departments, making it predictable for students, administration, teachers, and management alike."
Fagskolen Innlandet's journey demonstrates that systematic quality work does not have to be a heavy administrative burden. When it becomes a natural habit within the organization, the road to full accreditation becomes an integrated part of daily operations. For educational leaders looking to strengthen their foundation for accreditation, here are the essential steps:
Fagskolen Innlandet's journey shows that when feedback is continuous and shared, quality work becomes evidence, not effort.
