Simplicity means starting with the questions that matter most for your quality cycle. What does your team need to know in the first month to make better decisions by the end of the semester? Work backwards from that and remove what does not serve it.
Ownership means that every data point has a person or team responsible for reviewing it and deciding what happens next. A baseline without ownership produces reports. A baseline with ownership produces action.
Restraint means resisting the urge to measure everything at once. Survey fatigue builds across the academic year. A focused baseline that runs consistently across two or three intakes builds genuine longitudinal evidence. A wide one that is hard to sustain tends to get scaled back or abandoned.
A well-designed baseline does not just tell you how students feel. It tells you what changed, what your team did about it, and whether it made a difference.
By the end of the first semester, you should be able to show how the intake's experience evolved from arrival to assessment. You should have a visible improvement trail that connects specific feedback to specific actions. And students should know that their feedback was heard, because closing the loop is what makes them engage again next time.
That is what accreditation bodies are increasingly looking for. Not just evidence that you collected feedback, but evidence that it led somewhere.
